About The Parser The parser in this adventure game understands commands of the form where the command word is followed by zero or more object names. When the game asks you what you want to do, you may tell it to do several things. To enter more than one command at a time simply separate the individual commands by periods. For instance, a multiple command might look like this: N. GET UMBRELLA. USE UMBRELLA. Multiple commands are executed from left to right, therefore, in the example above, the player would first go north, then get the umbrella, and finally, use the umbrella. Not only can you specify more than one command at a time, you may also specify more than one object for a command to act upon. To do so simply separate the object names with either a comma or an ampersand. For instance, to get several objects at once you might enter a command that resembles this: GET MAN, POT, KEY, RR, BOX & SHIP. The parser will automatically break a multiple object command into individual commands. The example above would be equivalent to: GET MAN. GET POT. GET KEY. GET RR. GET BOX. GET SHIP. Of course, both multiple commands and multiple object commands can be combined at the same time as in: N. USE COMPUTER & TRANSMITTER. EXAMINE FOOD. Note: if a movement command precedes other commands and the movement command fails (i.e. you can't go that way) then the other commands will be ignored and you will be asked what you want to do next. There are 26 basic commands that the game understands. However, there are several alternate commands available that the computer will automatically translate to its equivalent known command. To get a complete list of available commands ask for HELP. There are several commands with one or two letter abbreviations including I or INV for INVENTORY, Q for QUIT, H or ? for HELP, and the standard directional abbreviations N, S, E, W, NW, NE, SW, and SE. Note that up and down are not valid directions in this adventure. The GO command can be abbreviated as either the direction name or the direction abbreviation or you may specify GO and a direction abbreviation as in GO NW. Some object names can also be abbreviated. Generally these are two word object names. With two word object names you may use either the first or the last word to specify the object. The exception to this is the POTTED CACTUS whose first word abbreviation is POT and not POTTED. Other object name abbreviations are not so obvious and include SHIP for SPACESHIP, RR for MODEL RAILROAD, FOOD for SANDWICH, and MAN for WISEMAN. About the World The world in this adventure consists of an 8 by 8 square grid. Walking over the edge of the world is possible and is always fatal. However, you may safely fly off of the world. There are five locations in the world that will always kill you unless you fly over them. This includes CHAOS and the four BOTTOMLESS PIT locations. The cave locations can also be fatal if you cannot see to move around. At the start of the adventure you will randomly be placed somewhere in the world. Naturally, in the interest of fairness, it won't be one of the fatal locations. To find out what you are supposed to do you will need to first find the king. To win you will need to deal with the dragon and with a prince that is initially something else. That's about all I can tell you here without giving the game away. However, several of the places have hints to help you in your quest and the wiseman gives good advice if you can wake him. If you get totally stuck you may wish to read the separate hint file MAGIHINT.DOC but you will need to use the DOS COPY command to read it since TYPE intentionally won't work. Good Luck.
