Senator Asher wore the boots as he snuck out to the pond to meet Linda, and got them muddy. But, while taking them off, he saw Ellen approaching with the lead pipe, so he hid in the Barn. Janet was hiding there, too, after leaving the insurance policy under a bale of hay. Some mud from the boots got on her costume.
